One of our English sessions this week involved students using three stella iPad apps to demonstrate their understanding of an Australian Curriculum standard.
Australian Curriculum Level 6 Content Description
Understand how authors often innovate on text structures and play with language features to
Students explored the amazing WWF Together app which communicates about endangered animals in an interactive and engaging way.
While they explored students thought about:
- The innovative aspects of the WWF Together app that make it communicate differently to a book.
- The effect the differences had on them as an audience.
Record audio reviews using Croak.it! app
Students recorded 30 second audio reviews, detailing their thinking about the app, on Croak.it! These recording were then posted to the Croak.it! website using private URLs.
Sharing the URL and thoughts on Google Drive App
Students shared the URL with their teachers and classmates via their educational Google Drive accounts. I listened to the recordings as they appeared in my Drive account and comment on the students thoughts. We listened to some of the recordings on the Interactive Whiteboard, as a group, using AirPlay through the Air Server Mac and PC applications.
Reflection on the students learning
While I intended that the students would explore the differences between texts and their effects my main focus for the lesson was practising some iPad workflow skills like copying and pasting, working with Drive and other apps. I was impressed by the high quality 30 second reviews the students share with me. They communicated clearly how an app engages them through the interactive elements and motivated them to learn more about the animals than a book would. They also spoke about how the app made the information visual and realistic which had more meaning.
