Visual Thesaurus website and iPad App

*NOTE: CORRECTIONS MADE ABOUT THE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE TWO APPS.

Today we were lucky enough to attend an engaging, practical and thought provoking PD session, with a focus on developing independent learners and thinkers through the Habits of Mind, facilitated by @karenboyes. Karen introduced us to the visualthesaurus.com web app which works on the iPad through your browser. Looking around I found that their is a similar iPad app called visual thesaurus.

Visual thesaurus is...
a thesaurus and dictionary iPad app, $1.99, that lets you search for a word and then that word is broken down into similar words which are displayed as a word map (see above image).

Visual thesaurus can be used by learners...
to expand their vocabulary, to self edit writing by searching for words that they are over using and learning about nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs. Words are colour coded into these categories. The app can also be used to find word meanings, like a traditional dictionary.

Karen has some ripper ideas and is a blast to learn from, even for over 6 hours straight, so I would encourage anyone who has the opportunity to work with her to take it. Thanks Karen!

You can check out the iPad app here for $1.99.
