The label digital natives led me to assume that all young people knew their way around iOS devices. However, last week I discovered (as per usual) my assumption was drastically wrong. During a lesson that used Explain Everything with 11 and 12 year olds I was asked a number of questions relating to iPad basic that I had assumed every student would know. I even had students stumped figuring out how to turn on the iPad which shocked me.
There are probably a number of factors why some students do not know there way around an iPad. I think that it is important that all students are given a quick lesson on the simple skills before groups of students begin using the devices.
Video guide for iPad begginers
Here is a tutorial I have created to teach students, who are beginners on the iPad, the basic-yet-essential skills required to use the iPad effectively.
I think the basic essential skills on the iPad are:
- turning the device on and off.
- navigating through the device to find apps
- by scrolling and searching folders.
- by bringing up the search menu from the home screen and searching the app you want to use.
- getting out of apps by using the full hand screen grab and the home button.
- swiping between apps so you can multitask.
- taking a screen shot.
- saving images, from apps or browsers, into your camera roll.
What else?
What other iPad skills, tips, tricks and advice do beginners on the iPad need?
